Somatic Therapy
Somatic Therapy is a form of body-centered therapy that looks at the connection between mind and body and uses both psychotherapy and physical therapies for holistic healing. In addition to talk therapy, Somatic therapists use mind-body exercises and other physical techniques to help release the pent-up tension that negatively affects a patient’s physical and emotional well-being. The belief that the body can manifest mental unease and can also help heal it is at the heart of Somatic Therapy. Somatic therapists view the mind and body as intimately connected and help clients explore how their thoughts, emotions, and sensations are interconnected and influence one another. Somatic Therapy sees the body as a resource for psychotherapy, including what can be learned from a one’s gestures, posture, facial expressions, eye gaze, and movements. Somatic Therapy techniques include breathwork, relaxation exercises, and meditation, and may also incorporate Complementary and Alternative Medicine such as massage, acupuncture, reiki, or tai chi.
