Person-Centered Therapy
Person-Centered Therapy (PCT) is a client-based and non-authoritative approach to psychotherapy that empowers clients to take the lead role in sessions and, in the process, discover their own solutions. PCT helps clients embrace that they—and not anyone else—knows what is best for them. PCT is rooted in the core conditions of Unconditional Positive Regard, Empathy, and Genuineness. The goal of PCT is Self-Actualization, or the idea that each of us has the power to find the best solutions for ourselves and the ability to make appropriate changes in our lives. During Person-Centered Therapy, the therapist acts as a compassionate facilitator—rather than as an expert on the client’s problems—by listening without judgment and acknowledging the client’s experience without shifting the conversation in another direction. The therapist is there to encourage and support the client without interrupting or interfering with their process of self-discovery, as they uncover what hurts and what is needed to repair it.
